Summary
- In surgery, the first scrub is a person - typically a nurse or specially trained surgical technician - who dons mask, gown, and gloves and approaches the sterile field to directly assist the surgeon, primarily by organizing, preparing, and passing instruments for his or her use. Not to be confused with first assistant, who directly assists in surgery, or a circulating nurse, whose job is to see that everything is in order.
